Idling Among the Monks

Spending time at the Studenitza Monastery is a delightful experience. Here, you can relax in the shade of the trees and enjoy the company of the monks. These black-haired, black-bearded men wear simple black robes and seem genuinely happy. They have no grand ambitions—just the desire to rest eternally close to the old church, where moss-covered stones mark the graves of monks who have found peace for centuries.

The Inn and Local Wine

Just beyond the monastery gates, there is a cozy inn. Vine leaves hang over twisted branches, providing a perfect spot to sit and sip local wine in the warm afternoon. This wine is tart and strong, and it’s a joy to share several glasses with friends, all for just a small price. When the bell rings for vespers, the monks leave to pray for everyone, creating a calm and respectful atmosphere The Sacredness of King Stephen’s Remains.

Simple Meals and Traditions

As night falls, the monastery prepares a simple dinner. In a dimly lit hall, the Archimandrite offers a blessing. I sit next to him, with my interpreter across from me. The peasant servants, dressed in clean linen, quietly wait. It’s a time of fasting, so the Archimandrite eats lightly—just porridge and small cucumbers soaked in vinegar. My meal is slightly better, but still includes vinegar-soaked dishes, a traditional way to keep cool in the warm climate.

Then comes the highlight: the monastery’s wine. A large flagon of cool, delicious wine, made from grapes grown and harvested by the monks, is brought to the table. The Archimandrite takes pride in his wine, filling my glass repeatedly. He watches my reaction with keen interest, eager to see how I enjoy it. After a few sips, he raises his glass to toast my visit Istanbul Day Trip.

A Heartfelt Toast

The Archimandrite stands, his tall figure leaning over the table, his black eyes shining under his wide-brimmed hat. “My heart is very glad,” he says. “It is a bright day, for the son of the most enlightened of nations has traveled all this way to honor our humble monastery. I wish him a pleasant journey and a quick return to Servia.”

I struggle with how to respond to such kind words. Not being skilled at making speeches, I tell my interpreter to express my gratitude. He translates my feelings into elaborate words, saying, “The heart of the gospodin is so touched with your kindness that his tongue cannot express all he feels.”

The Essence of the Experience

This monastic retreat is not just about relaxation; it’s about connection—both with the monks and with the traditions of the land. Here, the simple pleasures of life, such as good food and wine, take center stage. The peaceful environment allows for reflection and appreciation of the rich history and spirituality that surrounds this sacred place.
